Before talking about the experiences I went through with vitiligo I would like to briefly discuss:

  • What is vitiligo?
  • Its signs and symptoms
  • Cure of Vitiligo.

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a chronic disorder that causes depigmentation of patches of skin. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, die or are unable to function. The cause of Vitiligo is unknown, but research suggests that it may arise from autoimmune, genetic, oxidative stress, neural, or viral causes.

Its signs and symptoms:

The most notable symptom of vitiligo is depigmentation of patches of skin. Although patches are initially small, they often enlarge and change shape. When skin lesions occur, they are most prominent on the face, hands and wrists. Depigmentation is particularly noticeable around body orifices, such as the mouth, eyes, nostrils, genitalia and umbilicus. In regard to psychological damage, vitiligo can have a significant effect on the mental health of a patient.Patients who are stigmatised for their condition may experience depression and mood disorders.

Cure of vitiligo:

When we talk about the cure of vitiligo,it is very sad to say that the complete eradication of the disease is not possible yet, there is no such thing that can permanently eradicate the basic abnormality caused by vitiligo but we can handle the local manifestations (white patches) using any appropriate topical or oral therapies. The vitiligo treatments that are available either offer repigmentation or complete depigmentation to even out the skin tone.

There are a lot of methods to improve the appearance of vitiligo without treating the underlying causes. These treatments are:

  • Cover Up/Cosmetic Makeups
  • Topical Corticosteroid Creams
  • Topical Oxsoralen
  • Mini Grafting
  • PUVA (Oral Psoralens + UVA Irradiation)

A well-grounded obstacle in vitiligo cure is emotional stress that may enlarge the size and number of white spots.

My experience of  vitiligo:

Although the incidence worldwide is less than 1%,but unluckily I fall in that category.My 6 years old daughter is suffering from this disease. The signs of vitiligo started to appear when she was three, the very first white spot on her left eyelid that didn’t restore its original color even though she was given oral and topical medication but with the passage of time more of the whitepatches appeared on her feet, fingers and her lower abdomen. After having all possible medical treatments including UVB narrowband when I didn’t notice any repigmentation I decided  to leave the young girl with it as she was being emotionally stressed. Almost 6-8 months passed like that when one day a friend of mine saw her and told me about the herbal medicine with the belief that it will definitely repigment her skin and that her own niece got cured with it but one has to be regular and patient as it is going to take time like years.

On hearing all that, once again hope emerged and I started the herbal treatment in march 2010 and i feel good to state here that I definitely noticed improvement, though slow but I am hopeful that my daughter is going to regain her pigment. So I thought to share the medicine here, so all suffering from vitiligo can get their original skin tone back.

The medicine is to be made by soaking the fresh small leaves of Indian Lilac(Neem) in clarified butter(ghee) of cow’s milk for 20-25 mins and then cooking it on low flame till all clarified butter(ghee) melts and its color changes to olive green, drain the liquid n throw the leaves. Let the liquid cool and take one tablespoon daily in the morning before eating anything else. Please do wash the laeves before soaking them in clarified butter and also try to get small sized leaves and clarified butter should only be of cow’s milk.

I pray that my daughter and many others suffering from vitiligo get cured. If anyone has some better solution please do share.

“We say that the hour of death cannot be forecast, but when we say this we imagine that hour as placed in an obscure and distant future.  It never occurs to us that it has any connection with the day already begun or that death could arrive this same afternoon, this afternoon which is so certain and which has every hour filled in advance.”
Marcel Proust

Life is so uncertain…I had not realized until July 28, 2010, a gloomiest day in the history of Islamabad, when Air Blue,a Pakistani airline, passenger aircraft crashed into beautiful hills of Margalla and lives of 152 individulas were lost in no time.  The night before was the “night of blessings and clemency” or otherwise known as (Shab-e-Barat.)People must have prayed for themselves and for their loved ones’  health, well being, long lives and ask for forgiveness for their mortal and immortal sins with the strong belief that “ALLAH IS MERCIFUL” which is indeed true but who knew that the next morning would bring darkness and their loved ones, friends, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, children will depart for the eternal world leaving them behind in this temporary world.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace and may God Almighty give their families the strength to cope with the loss.

There are many unanswered questions about this tragedy:  who is responsible for the tragic accident –   the pilot or the Air Traffic Controller or was it a mechanichal failure or, once again, the blame will rest on mother nature?

Countless questions and countless hypothetical answers, I would not like to blame anyone here without knowing all the details.  Nonetheless, I would just like to speculate what could have happened based on pilot’s last words.  The pilot was told to make one more round as the run way was not vacant for the flight to land and he did what he was asked to but then what made him go towards the Margalla Hills? But as it is said in urdu “ayee hui ko koi taal nahi sakta, bahana ban hi jata hai”, so , was this simply a divine excuse because their “time” was up in this world or something more to it?

I especially want to dedicate the following piece of writing to the victims of this tragic accident:

“Niklay thay apnay ghar sai azizon k dais ko

manzil k paas pohnchay to safeena ujar gya”

I pray may God Almighty forgive us for all our sins and keep us and our families safe and healthy. Ameen!

I also plea to our Government that PLEASE don’t let this case disappear or die with time like many others without fair investigation.
